Coloured hands evoke certain associations. In the past they were often used by certain professions. A golden hand pointed towards a soap maker, a blue hand was often associated with a cloth dyer. Cloth was generally dyed blue. The 'luibe' (=meeting place) or craft room of the dyers on the corner of the Grote Staat/Nieuwstraat was therefore called "dye blauwhand" in 1588.
It is unknown whether there is a specific link between the cloth dyer's craft and IN THE BLUE HAND at Markt 55.
Fragments from the past.
In the newspaper 'Journal de la province de Limbourg', this advertisement was placed on 10 October 1827: the widow Bemelmans in Tafelstraat rented out accommodation ("quarters") in the "Blue Hand".
