Gable stone IN THE GOLDEN COCK  1767, Muntstraat 43,  has been refurbished fairly recently. It has an interesting caption. When there is enough light you can see that that the word GOLDEn has been cut over the word RED.
There was of course not enough space  and it was only just possible to place a lower case n behind the word GOLDE.
The reason for this correction is not clear. Possibly a cutting error, but that was usually no reason to correct the mistake. Maybe there were already too many red cocks? But why did it have to be a golden one? They were not exactly rare either.
The history of the house name is not conclusive. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the names "de haan" (the cock) and "gulden haan" (the golden cock) are mentioned, until in the year the gable stone appears, in a period of two months, the following names appear: "rode haan" (red cock), "haan" (cock) and "gouden haan" (golden cock), while in 1781 the house is again called "rode haan" (red cock). Very confusing therefore. Who knows?

Yet something more can be said about the year 1767 of the Gable stone. The text of one of the gichten (register of purchases and sales) in 1767 says: "Johanna Denis widow the late Willem Hellinx in regte is besittende zeker huys gestaan en gelegen hier op de Munt namt den gouden haan alwelck huys door des zelf caduque en bouwvallig op voorlede jaer aan haer van stadsweegen wordt aangesegt of dat het zelve hertimmert moesten geworden niet alleen met de voorgevel, maar ook met het binnewerk zijnde het zelve huys door selfs bouwvalligheid reeds moeten gesteepen (=supported) worden tot voorkominge van ongelucken". The Gable stone was placed when the building was completely rebuilt.
