Numerous gable stones refer to breweries, which usually also had a tap room as an annex. Already in the sixteenth century the breweries IN THE RED GATE and the SWAN were located in Stokstraat. The relevant gable stones have been preserved and are located here and at Stokstraat 37. The representation on the gable stone IN THE RED GATE is rather simple, but the detailed execution testifies to craftsmanship.
The house Stokstraat 14, which already bore that name before 1600, must have originally had a red gate, but it was quite common to paint a whole house in that colour. Whether this was the case, we do not know, but after the renovation of Stokstraat the whole house was given a red colour. The result is very appropriate for this building.
