This gable stone, or rather a replica, has been replaced In the facade of 61 Boschstraat. The original stone disappeared to Brussels where it was once found, but could not be returned. Based on a photo, it was decided to make a hardstone replica, which was made possible by a successful sponsor campaign .
The original hay wagon comes from the cafe In the Hay Cart at Maastrichter Grachtstraat 37. Victor de Stuers saw it there in 1867, and the Register of House Numbers also mentions the gable stone at that address. But why and when it disappeared there remains a mystery.
Usually an attempt is made to return a gablestone that is broken out of a wall to its old address, but the Maastrichter Grachtstraat was part of a renovation of the Boschstraat quarter, and new buildings were built with a new name: Lakenweversstraat. Nearby was Boschstraat 61, whose facade was a logical choice due to its age and appearance. There was one problem. The stone was just too large to fit between the hardstone corbelling and the window sill above. With some craftsmanship, this was solved.
