In 1954 IN THE ROSE would have been moved from the back to the front of Hoogbrugstraat 25. It is strange that the neighbouring houses mentioned in the archives were on the other side. Is it a question of another stone or a relocation?

The fact that the choice of the name of the house was usually a haphazard one has resulted in the most every day sort of subjects on the gable stone, even in multiples. In Maastricht, for instance, there were seven houses that carried the name Roos. Probably even more, but those seven had a gable stone with a rose on the facade as proof. As an identity mark therefore not exactly unique, unless it was the family name. Colour could certainly help, but since usually the street name and neighbouring houses were mentioned, mistakes were kept to a minimum.
