The inscription of IN THE WHITE ANGEL 1765, Hoogbrugstraat 18, should have read: in the invisible angel, because apart from the text, the gablestone is empty. There is not even a trace of an image that may have been cut out, although there was room for it. Perhaps there existed a second stone or a separate image. This is possible, because the facade of Hoogbrugstraat 18 has been renewed. The shape of the stone also indicates that it originally stood between two curved uprights.
Inventive residents did add an angel. First it was a Christmas angel, now it is a not unpleasant angel of wire iron, which - if the sun cooperates - provides a shadow angel.
Not so long ago there was a shield above the stone that showed an angel, but that was not part of the gable stone or the house name, because it was a fire insurance plate from PRIMES BRUXELLES. In those days that was the way to show that the building was insured in the event of a fire.
