The current political situation of the province of Limburg only came about in the 19th century with the formation of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Before that time the present province and country borders should be forgotten. It was a complicated patchwork quilt of different counties and dukedoms. Maastricht, for instance, was in those days part of Liege-Brabant's territory.
The former duchy of Limburg was situated in present-day Belgium and had the little town of Limbourg as its capital, situated on the Vesdre between Verviers and Eupen, where the owner of IN THE CASTLE  OF LIMBORG may have come from.
