The two dragons with their heads turned towards each other could be seen until 1930 in the Grote Staat at no. 23. It is remarkable that the upper corners of the gable stone have disappeared (have perhaps been cut off?). Presumably this happened during renovation works when the window bars were extended downwards according to the fashion of the time.
In the Boschstraat the protruding part of the gable stone has been narrowed down a little further at the top, so that it fits between the windows as if it has always been there.
Grote Staat 23 was the birthplace of the Schaepkens brothers, Alexander, Arnould and Theodore.
In 1930 the Grote Staat 23 building underwent a major renovation during which the old facade disappeared completely. The gable stone "In the dragons' field" was stored. The striking facade from 1930 is bent and is now a striking element in the Grote Staat. The steel windows are articulated as bay windows. Of the front facade only the facade on the ground floor is no longer original from 1930.
Grote Staat 23 is of great importance as an example of one of the few buildings in the Maastricht inner city where the original steel windows are still present. The building is also important as an example of a design from the oeuvre of the architect Alfons Boosten (1893-1951). The facade is unique for the city of Maastricht in its design, style and use of steel windows. Only the modern lower facade is a disruptive innovation.
