Here is IN THE GOLDEN CROSS 1752. The stone survived an interim relocation. Discovered in a back wall at Nieuwstraat, it was relocated at its original address.
In contrast to the Protestant north, you find many saints on gablestones, placed to beg for protection from the saint. But for the ultimate protection you had to be with Christ, the son of God, who was represented by the cross. So there were plenty of crosses in all shapes and sizes.

Sometimes this protection was mentioned once more, such as on the gable stone of Lantaarnstraat 4 with the text:
sUb sIgno CrUCIs eXfUnDo tUte forMatUr,
i.e. Under the sign of the cross (this house) is built safely from the foundation up (1737).
