In Maastricht's city centre we are gradually seeing the colours of the facades become more varied. The use of different colours must have been quite common in the past, as it still is in more southern countries today. It can only contribute to a colourful streetscape. It is possible that where several animals, objects or places on signs or gable stones had the same depiction, this played a role in ensuring uniqueness, because it was important to find a particular building.
