Nowadays, we have brown bricks or granite-grey houses, either painted white or not; in the past it was all a lot more colourful, as is still the case in southern countries.
If you were looking for a name for your house, you could draw inspiration from it without having to go to a lot of trouble to come up with something special, and so the blue, green or red houses appeared as names on gable stones. Or you could use another striking feature, such as, for instance, the height.
All was fine, as long as the house was easily recognisable.
