A lion comes crawling out of a mountain. The image therefore corresponds to the caption LION'S STONE 1751. But the word "steen" (stone) has another meaning: the stone house, and so Leeuwensteen could mean the (stone) house of (the family of) De Leeuw. At least, the name De Leo was not unknown in medieval Maastricht.
Possibly there is also a connection with the house 'de leeuwenberg supra monetam' mentioned in 1282, which was the street formed by the Muntstraat and the present Kleine Staat.
