Grape growing and wine consumption were not insignificant in early Maastricht.
The wine excise book of 1526 shows that there were about 36 wine houses here in the city.
It is said that the corresponding house name would have been 'in the little barrel', but this does not occur in this street, though the clergy tap does.
This is not hard to imagine and comparable with the clergy tap in Rechtstraat, which was the regular pub for the parish clergy of St. Martin's Church.
