Grape growing and wine consumption were not inconsiderable in early Maastricht.
The wine excise book of 1526 shows that there were some 36 wineries here in the city.
The commission for this Gable stone from 1737 came from Maria Geertruijd Sleijpen, widow of notary Reinier Schaepen. He died in 1717, and when her parents also died, she returned to her birthplace at Lenculenstraat Her father Jacob Sleijpen bought the property in 1680. He was a master cooper (barrels for transporting wine and beer, among other things) and probably gave the house the name "wine barrel. In 1737, his daughter commissioned a new facade with a new Gable stone and maintained the name. She was then a merchant in wines.
