There is something wrong with the gablestone 17 IN THE WHITE SHEEP 64 at Kersenmarkt 10, not with the image but with the caption. The use of lower case letters in a gable stone of this age is unacceptable. It is therefore a completely new stone after the design of sculptor Charles Vos. It replaces an older (standing) sheep, which was severely damaged with its legs cut off after a facade modification.
This also bore the French caption, but for De Stuers it was no longer clearly legible at the end, and he therefore noted it down as: au mouton bla(u of n). Apparently, this tickled Van Lennep's fancy in his book "De Opschriften", where he had the poor sheep turn blue if not purple with fear, due to the presence of the wolf (Wolf Street!). There's nothing better than fantasy!
