For those who still do not know: the name of this cafe is derived from the French caracole meaning vineyard snail.
In the 'gichten' (=register of purchases and sales) between 1744 and 1784, a house in Stokstraat is mentioned twelve times. It was known under the names Caracole, Karakol and Karkol. Unfortunately, house numbers did not yet exist at that time, so it is not certain that this is 5 Stokstraat. The fact that the one who gave the pub its name was apparently very sure of this and knew that a caracol is a vineyard snail is evident from the modern gablestone at the back of the cafe.
