A LA MONTAGNE COURONNEE
IN THE CROWNED MOUNTAIN
With a little imagination, one can indeed discover a mountain on this stone with a crown on top. The use of a crown on this "croenenberg" is not strange or rare and is probably due to heraldic influence.. When well-to-do citizens started using family coats of arms, they used, of course, the examples in the noble coats of arms. And a crown clearly gave a more prominent appearance.
In the eighteenth century, the house was owned by the Van den Bergh family. The stone is possibly an allusion to that family name.
The use of a French text was not unusual in Frencophone-oriented Maastricht. Remarkable is the fact that this stone is bilingual..
