Although no one immediately thinks of a gable stone, the upper part of the door ornamentation did have the same function, namely that of depicting the house name, in this case IN THE ROSE GARDEN.
The entire richly decorated lower facade of 'in the rose garden' - from Grote Staat 9, better known as the Pieters-Teuwen shop - had to make way for the new V&D department store. In 1930 consideration was given to rebuilding this facade in the building to the right of the Dinghuis, as this building 'does not have a beautiful old facade' (see newspaper cutting and accompanying photographs). This did not happen. The entire facade was kept for years and reinstalled in Stokstraat 17.
