In 1779 locksmith Joannes Keyen had a new facade built for his house "the golden cross" in Maastrichter Smedenstraat 25.
The house name and the year were immortalised on the gable stone: ANNO 1779 IN THE GOLDEN CROSS. This is once more proof that the name on the gable stone did not just appear out of the blue, but was a continuation of the house name, which was then made of stone together with the facade.
In 1868 Victor de Stuers wrote that apart from the inscription with the name and the date, "there used to be a cross ".
A cross, which, like the present representation, must have been painted and then was gone.
