Canon Salden was the founder of the Armenhuis in 1755, which was built on this site two years later. This wealthy priest from the Chapter of St. Servaas had made a testamentary gift to the "Catholique Armen der stad Maestricht". It did not function long as an almshouse. In 1793 and 1794 this monumental building was requisitioned as barracks due to the threat of war. Shortly afterwards it was designated as a military hospital. Shortly after the liberation on 14 September 1944 the building became a special camp for political prisoners, soon known as "De Groote Looier". More recently it was given various other destinations, such as the city archives, the city library and now the University Library.
