Coloured hands

They are two stones that belong together: a left hand and a right hand. It is a so-called double stone, which was used on a corner house that had two fronts.

Coloured hands evoke associations. In the past they were used by certain occupational groups. A golden hand pointed in the direction of a soap maker, and a blue hand was often associated with a cloth dyer. In 1588 the dyer's meeting room or craft room on the corner of Grote Staat / Nieuwstraat was called 'dye blauwhand'.

Re-located

Victor de Stuers saw these double stones in 1868 on the corner of Grote Staat and Muntstraat. In 1912 they were still there in the facade. But at some point they were extracted at this location and ended up in the depository, from where they were reinstalled on the corner of Lenculenstraat in 1954.
