Franciscan or Friars Minor church

In 1234 the Franciscans received permission to found a monastery at Pieterstraat, and in 1298 they started building a large monastery church in Gothic style with marlstone blocks on a foundation of hard stone and coal sandstone. At the end of the fifteenth century he nave was fitted with flying buttresses and several monastery buildings were built around a new cloister.

In 1632 the Franciscan fathers were expelled from the city after the "Treason of Father Finch. He was accused by the State Protestant powers of having wanted to play Maastricht into the hands of the Spanish army (read Catholics) together with some other "conspirators". It has never been proven, by the way.

The monastery buildings were used for various military purposes until 1876, and since 1881 the State Archives have been located here.
