This gate marks the entrance to the former Friar Minors' Monastery and was placed here as a gift from Maastricht for the 700th anniversary of the Friar Minors' foundation here in the city.
The two hands with the cross are taken from the Friar Minors' coat of arms.

The Friars Minor monastery was the third monastery of this order within Maastricht. It was founded in 1856 and was enclosed behind the buildings of Abtstraat and Tongersestraat.
In order to have an exit to the outside Tongersestraat 28 was demolished and this gate was erected.
