St Nicholas was often found on gable stones, placed to beg for protection from the saint. But for the ultimate protection you had to go to Christ, who was represented by the cross.
In its facade Tongersestraat 37 has a small weathered marlstone, on which a simple crowned cross is depicted with the date 1748, possibly originating from Tongersestraat 19.
In the 18th century there was a house in Tongersestraat called the White Cross.
