THIS HOUSE IS CALLED IN THE GOLDEN CARROT. In the last century this could still be read under the representation of the carrot at Rechtstraat 27.
Unfortunately, somewhere in the process of removal, storage and finally relocation in the facade of Rechtstraat 46 this text has been lost.
The carrot could of course refer to the profession of greengrocer of the then occupant. However, there may also be another explanation. From time immemorial there has been a rivalry between the two districts Wijck and Maastricht. The Maastrichtenaar, known for his fondness of "reubesop" (=rap soup with mutton) was called a "reubeslikker" (=rap swallower), to put it nicely.
The people of Wijck were called "carrot thieves", not because there were so many greengrocers living in the old streets of Wijck, but because it was said that "euver de brögk" (across the bridge) they ate nothing but carrot pies.
However, having a carrot as a house characteristic in order to taunt or express pride or self-mockery would be a highly exceptional.
