The house name of IN THE COW 1718, Koestraat 4, is probably the name giver of the street, which had been nameless for a long time and of which the following description was found: "die straete bij de busschops maltmoelen, dae men geit te mijnrebruederen wart" (=the little street near the bishop's mill where one goes in the direction of the Friars Minor monastery).
As far as we know, Koestraat was first mentioned in 1524. A cow in the centre of town? It could mean anything, but one must realise that there were farms in various places within the city walls, partly because the cattle had to be inside the walls when the city was under threat.
