According to the newspaper, the blue dog was found again in 1981 during demolition work in Ridderstraat. Found is actually a big word, because the dog had been in the facade of Ridderstraat 1a (photo 1912) for some time, which was part of the Mabro, the bread factory between OL Vrouweplein and Ridderstraat.
There were more gable stones with representations of animals, objects or places, and then the city had to intervene in order to guarantee uniqueness, which was done by painting the gablestone in a certain colour. Possibly that is why here "In den blauwen hondt" was chosen.
In 1878 the Mabro was located at that spot, where there used to be a brewery named 'de blauwe hond' (the blue dog) and where therefore this Gable stone was located. It is even possible that this brewery is the same one that was known as 'the blue dog' in Achter het Vleeshuis in the 17th and 18th centuries .
The Mabro was demolished in 1980 and made way for the apartment complex Hondertmarck, where the 'recovered' dog was relocated above the entrance at OL Vrouweplein 18.
