Until recently the imperial crown was hardly recognisable as such, because the gable stone and facade were thickly painted over, and the shape of the chopped off crown could barely be distinguished.
There was nothing to be done except scratch away several layers of paint to find out exactly what was underneath.
The house used to be called "the emperor's crown" and even "la couronne impériale" in French times. That sounds a bit more expensive and possibly also more provocative. Is this perhaps the reason why the gable stone at the time fell prey to vandalism?
