In the Middle Ages many gun smiths worked in the city. Many house names, which still existed in the eighteenth century, recalled the arms industry. So does this gable stone.
According to the archive picture from 1912 this stone with the date 1734 comes from Maastrichter Brugstraat 14. This year stone is probably the same as the one now in the facade of Maastrichter Brugstraat 18.
A storming helmet is nothing else than a metal helmet, here with a large leather brim, which the soldier hoped would offer some protection when storming a fortress.
Houses called stormhoed (=storming helmet) were also at Mariastraat, Rechtstraat and Kakeberg.
