The mansion was built in 1863 to a design by Wilhelm Wickop and commissioned by the Maastricht industrialist Petrus II Regout, who went to live there with his wife Amélie Polis and their ten children. Later, his son Petrus III lived there with his family for some time.

The motto on the facade means: Together you stand stronger.
It is not clear whether Petrus Regout had it placed, and if so, why.
