Several sheep can be seen on Maastricht gable stones. People often did not go for the extravagant, but preferred ordinary, everyday subjects such as animals, plants, flowers and objects. At the same time, something had to be unique. A colour could help. That may be why "In the black sheep" was chosen.
In the archive photo of 1912 you can clearly see that the gable stone was cut off at the bottom and that this edge was later repaired and a new inscription was added.
