This stone at Markt 63 is generally called "the horseman", apparently for lack of a caption.
Nevertheless, the depiction does give certain clues. Coat of arms and staff indicate a commander. The same attributes can be seen on the stone of the Prince of Orange at Boschstraat. We are possibly dealing with another "prince of orange" or "the young prince of orange" which were used as house names in this corner of the Markt.
William II could well be one of the contenders to which this gable stone refers. He was the son of stadtholder and Prince FrederickHenry of Orange. His great-niece was Amalia van Solms. At the age of 14 he married the nine-year-old Maria Henrietta Stuart, the eldest daughter of King Charles I of England. He was stadtholder for three years and died in 1650, aged 24.
