Monumental, richly decorated carriage entrance to the former house of Count de Vilain XIV, used in 1938 in the new building of the Jesuit monastery as the access to the square in front of the (former) rectorate church of the Sacred Heart and part of the Canisium.

The monastery of the Jesuit fathers was built in 1939 on the site of the Tongeren Barracks for the cavalry soldiers of the garrison. Just behind the high town wall, so that they could be quickly on the spot in case of an alarm. During the demolition, the (refuge) house of the noble Vilain family on the east side was preserved. This city palace was built at the end of the 18th century with a spacious forecourt with coach houses and stables. On the street side the property was closed off by this Louis XV style carriage gate. This is one of the few remnants of that time. To the left of the gate there is a small chapel for the devotional statue of Mary of Foy, Comforter of the Sorrowful. It dates from the middle of the 17th century. In a wall on the left behind the gate there is a memorial stone with three 18th-century tombstones from the old Jesuit church at Bredestraat.

Now the School of Business and Economics of Maastricht University is located on the site.
