The time verse ManU DeI ConstrUCta tUI(Built by the hand of your God, 1717 ) originally comes from cafe In den Rooden Haan (=In the red cock), currently Lage Kanaaldijk 112-113, which fell victim to the expansion of the ENCI cement factory.
In 1920 the earlier street name and numbering Kanaalweg 106 in the former municipality of Sint Pieter were changed after the annexation of Sint Pieter.
This road was traditionally the southern connecting road between the Belgian border and Maastricht. It was known for its many pubs, thanks to the high indirect tax on liquor in Maastricht, and vibrant nightlife for the people of Maastricht, for Belgians and for passing boaters after the realisation of the canal to Liege in 1853.
On the archive photo of the red cock, another stone can be seen above the right door, possibly from the chronogram at Kanaalweg 106, which is mentioned in Listed buildings of Maastricht, part 2. There is also a keystone from 1817 with the addition 'burnt out'.
According to a local resident, the cafe did indeed burn to the ground - which could, of course, have hapened during its demolition -, and the chronogram was then removed, stored in the depository of the Bonnefanten museum and finally relocated in 1984 at Boschstraat 51, a listed building dating from around 1600.
The building on the site that was later mentioned as Kanaalweg 106 was built in 1717 by Laurentius Loop. He was a gardener, farmer and operator of the brewery and tavern In Den Rooden Haan.
The tavern was also known for the cockfights held there.
