War memorial, called Mary of the good dive.
Depicted is the Star of the Sea - recognisable by the six-pointed star - protecting four people hiding under her cloak.
The motif of the protective 'madonna of the cloak' was generally known.
In memory of fellow citizens who were forced to go into hiding during the Second World War and, reportedly, especially of four young people from Maastricht who miraculously managed to stay out of German hands.
The relief by Charles Vos was unveiled in 1946 on the initiative of the 'Devotion along the Road' committee.
The Madonna of the Cross can also be found in the Jesuits' mountain in a wall painting of Belgian soldiers taking shelter under the cloak of Our Lady at the front near the river Yser in WWI.
The painting was made in 1924 by one of the Jesuit Fathers, who regularly spent their free time in the mountain.
