The facades of the former Nederlandsche Bank at Sint Jacobstraat and Papenstraat are decorated with the coats of arms of the Dutch provinces, while Maastricht can join the economic superpowers of Amsterdam and Rotterdam on the Vrijthof facade.
The building was constructed in 1920 to a design by Eduard Cuypers, a nephew of the famous architect Pierre Cuypers, and replaced the easternmost part of the Spanish Government. But while Cuypers designed churches in neo-gothic style, Eduard mainly designed railway stations and bank buildings in neo-classical style.
On the Vrijthof side there is a commemorative stone with the inscription: 'E. Cuypers architect'.
Initially, the facades were not whitewashed. That only happened in 1993 when the Banque Paribas was established there.
