Martinus was one of the most popular saints in the Middle Ages. In Maastricht you will find him on three gable stones and in Wijck, as well as in neighbouring Itteren, where he is the patron saint of the church.

The chronogram states that the house was rebuilt in 1723 after it had recently been destroyed, but does not say what happened. Possibly a fire. At the same time a good opportunity to provide the wooden(?) house with at least a stone facade (including a gable stone), as was usual in those days.

Saint Martin is always depicted in the same pose as a soldier cutting off a piece of his cloak for the poor beggar, remembering the words in Matthew 25:36: "I was naked and you clothed me".
