Saint Matthew originally did not belong to the group of 12 apostles, but after the betrayal and suicide of Judas Iscariot he became his substitute.
Little is known about what happened to the apostle Matthew.

He is the patron saint of builders and carpenters,, blacksmiths, bricklayers, swine herds, tailors and confectioners.
He is invoked against blisters, whooping cough, alcoholism, smallpox and infertility and at the beginning of the school year.

The facade sculpture at Boschstraat 97, looking towards the church of St. Matthew, bears the inscription S. MAT-THIAS b.v.o. and A.D. 1949. It is by Charles Vos and was installed on the initiative of the board of the Boschstraat Residents Association.

The church of St. Matthew (the Matthijs, as it is called in Maastricht) dates from about 1300, but was not the first church on this site.
The church fell victim to iconoclasm in 1566 and remained in protestant hands until the French era.

The church cursed together.
The 17th century the legend says that the cloth weavers of the Boschstraat quarter had paid for the construction of the church by levying a fine every time somebody cursed.
