Hoogbrugstraat 13; extension of No. 15 with an almost identical "advertising text": GOOD LODGINGS WHETHER ON FOOT OR ON HORSEBACK.
This was intended for the stranger who entered the city through the Hoogbrugge Gate. Whether on foot or on horseback, he would find good lodgings here.
Looking at the household names used in Maastricht in the past, it is obvious that people were certainly not looking for the most extraordinary names. They preferred names of everyday things, plants and animals. Thus one could come across a sheep or a lamb in several places
Should you sometimes wonder why the earlier sheep has ever disappeared from the facade of no. 15, you should have a look at the windows. There you can see that - when enlarging the windows downwards - the window sills were moved downwards and that they did not take the trouble to shorten the sills any further to give the gable stone the necessary space. So it did not fit between the windows and disappeared from the facade.
And via the museum depository it ended up at Muntstraat 23.
With the new sheep of 2002 in Hoogbrugstraat, creator Servé Minis has played a joke by transforming it into the sheep with five legs, a very popular TV series in the 1970s.
