Court of Tilly

Grote Gracht 90-92

There is a reasonable suspicion that this stone comes from Grote Gracht 90-92, the former city palace where Tilly lived during his governorship and which became known as Court of Tilly.
It is a guess, of course, but the coat of arms there that may have disappeared could be attributed to one of the many renovations that that building underwent over time, transforming from a "hotel de ville" to primary school, teacher training school and now Faculty of Cultural Studies of Maastricht University.
It was originally the Munsterbilzen refuge, owned in 1682 by two born Countesses of Reckheim and Cannonesses of Munsterbilzen, Anna Maria Eleonora and Anna Antoinetta. The first, the Princess Abbess, gave her share of the 'Gate of Munsterbilzen' to her sister when she left Munsterbilzen to marry the Count of Tilly.

Military

Claude Frederic Tilly (1648 - 1723) was a professional soldier. He first served in the armies of France and Spain, but in 1672 he entered the service of the States General. It was also he and his cavalry company who guarded the Prison Gate in The Hague when the De Witt brothers were imprisoned there. He only withdrew on the express written order of his superiors. His comment: "The De Witt brothers are now dead gentlemen."
Tilly's military career was finally concluded with the governorship of Maastricht from 1718 until his death in 1723.

Claude Frederic Tilly

In memory of Baron van Tilly and his wife, two large marble plaques can be found in the nave of Saint Servatius' Basilica.
