Six sheep are shown on the Maastricht gable stones. This underlines the fact that, when choosing a facade, one did not go for the extravagant, but preferred ordinary everyday subjects such as animals, plants and objects. At the same time, a gable stone had to have something unique, because it was important that the building in question could be found. A colour could help. This may explain the colour white of the "White Sheep".
