After having been in the museum for a while, the sun - according to some sources - was returned to its original address Spilstraat 4 in 1951.
However, this house name is not mentioned in the 'gichten' (register of purchases and sales) and De Stuers did not see the stone here in 1864. What he did see was a stone at Brusselsestraat (101?) representing the sun and with the inscription 17 IN THE SUN ...
The sign of the sun as a symbol of good luck, of doing good business, was especially popular with shopkeepers. Many Maastricht people will remember the "aw" and "nuij zon" (the old and the new sun) at Grote Staat. The sun could also be found as a house name (with or without a plaque) at Maastrichter Brugstraat 31, Hoogbrugstraat 72, Wolfstraat and Achter het Vleeshuis.
BIRTHPLACE OF JOSEPH HOLLMAN
1832 - 1926
COURT VIOLON CELLIST TO HIS MAJESTY WILLEM III
The memorial stone with painted inscription right under the roof-gutter indicates who was born here: Birthplace of Joseph Hollman 1852 - 1926, Court Violon cellist to His Majesty William III.
Joseph Hollman was a musical child prodigy admitted to the Brussels Music Academy at the age of 14, where he finished his training with a first prize. He then continued his cello studies in Paris and St Petersburg. He became a virtuoso musician and played with many renowned orchestras. He received many honours and was appointed court musician by king William III with the honorary title 'royal violincellist'.
Hollman died in 1926 in Paris but was buried in his birthplace Maastricht.
